Our Holiday Shopping List

Compiled by Mary Alice Hartsock

Happy holidays from the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University!

Have you started your holiday shopping? As Academy staffers, we almost always start our shopping in the Academy’s Gift Shop.

The Academy Shop has gifts for everyone on your list…but if you’re like us, you will be lucky to get out of there without buying something for yourself! You will find a wide selection of gifts, including fun and educational toys, books, and games for kids; paper products; science books; drinkware; and many, many other unique gifts for your friends and family. Below, staff from the Academy’s Education Department recommend a few of their favorite things!

T. rex Selfie T-shirt

I adore this shirt because it describes my selfie taking abilities so completely: #selfiefail.

Bone by Bone by Sara Levine

This book is a fantastic introduction to comparing animal skeletons and looking at how vertebrate animals are related to each other in a fun way. The illustrations by T.S. Spookytooth are accurate and entertaining.

Dinosaur Figurines

Last year, these were Christmas gifts to all the kiddos I know. My daughter’s dinosaur never left her side. Charlie the Triceratops even had breakfast with her after all the presents were opened.

This is a super cute apron in the style of one of my favorite dresses. I’m planning on sending one to each of my friends, along with a batch of Christmas cookies.

This is a great intermediate book for newer readers to read themselves and for adults to read to younger kids, too! It is cute and funny and we like to see something silly for the vegetarians out there!

Dinosaur Tie

Classy dinosaur ties are not that common to buy! (Believe me, I’ve looked.) I am excited to get this for my husband. He is a teacher and the kids love his ties. He will use it to get them excited about dinosaurs!

“I love you this much” Tee

Who doesn’t want an ironic dinosaur tee and especially one mocking T-rex? I only wish this came in more colors so I could don all my nieces and nephews in it.

Caterpillar to Butterfly

This is informative without becoming complex, colorful but not cartoony, and an excellent guide for any lepidopterist-in-training.
