These long strings of capsules often wash up on beaches after the embryonic snails have exited them. Of the literally millions of offspring each adult produces in its lifetime, only a handful will themselves make it to maturity.

The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel Universi The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University is deeply sorry for the role it has played in the Samuel G. Morton Cranial Collection. We strongly support the recommendations of the Morton Collection Committee and Penn Museum’s intention to return the remains of individuals in the collection to their descendants and communities of origin.

This collection originates at the Academy where Morton (1799-1851) served as president. Morton collected and studied human skulls – including those of Black Philadelphians – to support theories of white supremacy, which, like Penn Museum, the Academy vigorously rejects.

The Academy apologizes unequivocally for its historical involvement in the acquisition, possession and treatment of unethically acquired and held ancestors and remains utterly committed to building, through its mission, a more just, equitable and inclusive society.
Hey, it's Monday and you know what that means! #Mo Hey, it's Monday and you know what that means! #MolluskMonday! Two Green Turban shells (Turbo marmoratus) flank a resolutely shut Waterpot Oyster (Spondylus varians). Voids between its shell layers (here broken open) trap water, which can be heard sloshing around if a freshly-collected shell is shaken.

The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel Universi The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, in partnership with @PennEnvironment , is proud to present the world premiere of A River Reborn (2021). Too often we are inundated with lessons on how humanity has failed the environment. But there are success stories out there, and this film showcases one of them. A River Reborn demonstrates the opportunities that can arise as we work to reverse past failures of stewardship — a lesson to recall while we, as a global society, fight to mitigate the effects and acceleration of climate change.

Following a live virtual viewing of the film (approx. 30 minutes), there will be a live discussion featuring the film’s director/producer and environmental experts.

At the back is a Black-lip Pearl Oyster (Pinctada) and in the middle are two Thorny Oysters (Spondylus). A jar of squids at right is flanked by another containing a Giant Isopod (Bathynomus), a distant relative of the Pill Bug that happily lives in the deep ocean and not your back yard. The white tube is the exhumed burrow of the clam Kuphus polythalamia, a relatively small example of a shell that can be five feet long.
