Born on this day in 1823 Joseph Leidy, a Philadelphian, was the first great paleontologist in the United States. He made groundbreaking discoveries while a member of the Academy of Natural Sciences, including naming and describing Hadrosaurus foulkii, the most complete known dinosaur skeleton of the mid-19th Century. Our newest exhibit, co-curated by @seedkeeping , Heirloom Plants: Ancestral Seeds in Philadelphia celebrates community gardens and farms throughout the city, where plants, cultural heritage and community science intersect. Local community farms — Sankofa Community Farm at Bartram’s Garden, Novick Urban Farm, Villa Africana Colobó, Bahay 215, VietLead and Resilient Roots Farm — recently gathered to archive 25 heirloom plants in the Academy’s Botany Collection, or the herbarium. View these specimens for the first time, as well as ancestral stories and recipes from seed-keepers and gardeners who see Philadelphia as a place to make a home. #FossilFriday Discovery: Bothriolepis, a heavily armored fish 🐟️ that thrived during the Middle to Late Devonian Period. In Pennsylvania's Catskill Formation, paleontologists have uncovered fossils of Bothriolepis at various stages of life, including juveniles. Recent studies by Academy paleontologists reveal that these fossils likely represent clutches of hatchlings, isolated on floodplains after water levels dropped. This significant finding provides a rare glimpse into the reproductive behavior of Bothriolepis, adding a new layer of understanding to life in the Devonian Period.⁠
