No, really - Tiktaalik is the first creature in the fossil record to show some of the specialized features that we see in amphibians. Its body would have undulated in a fish-like, side-to-side motion, but over time, it developed limbs to carry this movement onto safer lands away from potential predators. Eventually, this motion would be passed on to lizards, snakes, crocodiles and other tetrapods - like you! ⁠

Pictured above is Lucy Say, a scientific illustrator who drew and colored plates for her husband Thomas Say's multi-volume book American Conchology. She was the first woman elected to be a member of the Academy of Natural Sciences in 1841.
