🦅 "Between Hawk & Buzzard: A Writing Workshop in Black Flight" will delve into the significance of birds and bird imagery in African American culture during the 19th century, touching on themes of freedom songs, prayers, idioms, and abolitionist speeches.⁠
⁠
✍️ Flying is freedom, and for formerly enslaved people like Sojourner Truth, the process of learning how to fly again in the afterlife of slavery required an intentional process of repossessing one's value and sense of self outside the confines of the slave economy. We'll discuss Truth's life and legacy, engage in generative writing prompts, and create our own "commonplace books" inspired by the 1800s practice of assembling visual and written materials.⁠

Poet and audio storyteller, Sojourner Ahebee (she/her) archives moments of intimacy between Black women. She writes about insecurity of historical archives and insecurity as a feeling that connects us to our most powerful desires. Her work has appeared in The Atlantic, NPR, The Academy of American Poets, MSNBC and on your grandmother’s radio. A recipient of the MacDowell Colony creative writing fellowship, her debut poetry chapbook, "Reporting from the Belly of the Night," was released in 2017.

We are thrilled to announce that we have received We are thrilled to announce that we have received funding from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage (@PewCenterArts) in support of our upcoming exhibition, "The Botany of Nations: Re-collecting the Lewis and Clark Herbarium With Indigenous Perspectives." The project forefronts the voices of Native Nations traditional knowledge keepers who have inhabited and sustainably stewarded the lands that Lewis & Clark traversed and contributed richly to the scientific knowledge advanced by the expedition.
